Many Single Parent Families
Face Real Hardship
Most think of single parents as women,
but there are more and more male parents going it alone than in the
past. Most do this by choice, but there are some that have no choice.
Either way, and for either sex, there are some things that will always
be a struggle. Even when money is not an issue, single parents have a
lot to do on their own that those of us with partners may take for
granted. Single parent families can be happy and productive, but this
does not come without struggles that other families simply do not have.
Mental support, or the lack there of, is one problem that single parent
families face. When both parents are in the home, they rely on each
other for emotional support more often than they realize. This might
mean the difference between having a good or bad day. This is something
that will come into focus rather quickly with single parent families.
The simple act of having someone to rely on daily is missing, and those
that are single must reach out to family for that support, and they may
not get it, or do not get enough.
There are some financial things that can happen with single parent
families that other families don’t have to worry about. Most families
today cannot thrive on just one income. That means that some single
parents are going to have a really hard time with finances. They may
have to get second jobs to stay above water, but because they do not
have a spouse, they have to pay for babysitting, which can eat away more
of the profits of that job. Because of this, some single parent families
will have to go without some of the simple things that the rest of us
take for granted.
There is help and support out there for single parent families. Though
this can be tough on the children, it is usually the parent that needs
the most support. There are specific groups just for the adult in the
single parent families. There are also financial support opportunities
in communities to help struggling families of all types, and these
should be used when times are lean. There are other struggles for
families with a single parent that are too numerous to name. If you know
such a family, do small things to help them out if you can. Just by
helping with food, or even babysitting, you can make a world of
difference in their lives.
